History of Bagdad, Arizona

Founded in 1882, Bagdad was originally a copper mining camp established by the United Verde Copper Company. The town was named after the ancient city of Baghdad in Iraq, and its first inhabitants were mostly miners from Wales and Cornwall, England. By 1883, Bagdad had a population of over 500 people and had become an important center for copper mining in the region. The town quickly grew over the next few decades with several businesses opening up and more people moving to the area.

In 1912, Bagdad officially became an incorporated town and began to experience further growth as new businesses moved into the area such as blacksmith shops, general stores, banks, and saloons. During this time period, many improvements were made to the town including paved roads and electricity.
