In spite of our French neighbors, Spain also contributed its bit of sand and had great importance in the development of this discipline. It all started on the Costa Brava (thanks to the contact with France for the Mediterranean) and gradually spread to the rest of the country.
Thanks to the 1929 Expo, a Japanese named ‘Tokumori’ arrived in Barcelona, which caused a sensation due to its “handmade” form of fishing submerged in the water completely. Due to the Spanish Civil War of 1936 this sport stagnated and the evolution was quite scarce, although Catalonia was always the gateway of new fishing methods. There are reliable testimonies about the extraordinary catches carried out by such characters as Antonio Detrell, Juan Gimbernat …
The sports journalist Carlos Partdo, through a public call in the newspaper ” WorldSports” was the first man in the journalistic field that addressed the submarine fishermen of Spain, a milestone for this sport, which was already beginning to have the Social recognition he deserved. From this call would arise what is known as the first Association of Underwater Fishing (APS) Barcelona (1946). One year after its foundation it already had 200 members, and was the first club of Europe in bringing together all these athletes.
Little by little the wick was being ignited by all the Peninsula, people who lived in the Coast or close to the sea were stuck elbows to belong to this club, and the liking was growing of such way that they arrived stories of catches from many different points of the country . Great monsters, fish of 3 meters … all were stories that fueled the passion for this sport.
In the mid-1950s numerous brands of underwater material began to be marketed to practice this sport. This was a before and after of the underwater fishing. He globalized it, extended it to each and every one of the inhabitants of Spain. Glasses, fins, rifles, first rifles of compressed air … and above, just at this time begins to develop the sport competition as we know it until now.
